Our Engineering Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Murat Uysal’s VISION project has been selected for funding under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Call “Innovative Training Networks” (ITN)

The “European Training Network on Visible Light based Interoperability and Networking (VISION)” project developed  by  Prof. Dr. Murat Uysal, our Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department Head, has been granted funding under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Call “Innovative Training Networks” (H2020-MSCA-ITN-2017). Prof. Dr. Murat Uysal’s project “VISION” has been selected from among 1,435 submissions  across Europe. The four-year project is expected to begin in July 2017. VISION has a 3.75 million Euro budget and has 6 academic and 5 industry partners from 7 countries in Europe. VISION also marks Özyeğin University’s first ITN project.

Innovative Wireless Communications Solutions for Smart Cities

The working principle of visible light communication (VLC) is the modulation of light emitting diodes (LED) at very high frequencies without any adverse effects on human eye or the level of lighting. LEDs are being widely used today both indoors and outdoors (i.e. for the illumination of houses, offices, street lambs, traffic lambs, head/tail lights). LED’s dual purpose for illumination and communication is a revolutionary solution. It is envisioned that VLC technology will also break new grounds in the telecommunications sector. The proposed Horizon 2020 project aims to build Europe’s first ITN Education Network and train researchers with PhDs who are specialized in this emerging wireless communications technology.

Who is Prof. Dr. Murat Uysal?

Murat Uysal received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Istanbul Technical University in 1995 and 1998, respectively.  He obtained his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University in 2001. In 2002, he joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Waterloo, Canada, as an assistant professor, where he was promoted to the rank of associate professor in 2007.  Dr. Uysal is currently a Full Professor at the Faculty of Engineering,  and Chair of the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering at Ozyegin University, Istanbul, Turkey. He also serves as the Founding Director of Center of Excellence in Optical Wireless Communication Technologies (OKATEM). Dr. Uysal’s research interests are in the broad areas of communication theory and signal processing with a particular emphasis on the design and analysis of wireless communication systems.  Prof Uysal’s distinctions include the Turkish Academy of Sciences Distinguished Young Scientist Award, NSERC Discovery Accelerator Supplement Award, University of Waterloo Engineering Research Excellence Award, and Ozyegin University Best Researcher Award among others.
