Results of “Earthquake Research” Call of TÜBİTAK- 1001 Scientific and Technological Research Projects Funding Program

Within the scope of TÜBİTAK ARDEB 1001-Scientific and Technological Research Projects Funding Program Earthquake Call which is opened for the first time in 2021, ÖzÜ researcher Asst. Prof. Evşen Yanmaz Adam’s Project proposal is selected for funding. We congratulate our researcher whose project will be supported and wish her an efficient project implementation process.

Project Title: Deep Learning and Computer Vision Assisted Multi-UAV Search and Rescue System

Project Summary: The aim of the project is to design and implement communication and coordination algorithms to enable self-organized teamwork within UAV swarms for real-time data delivery to Disaster Management entities and behavior-adaptation based on observations of on-board-sensors/human-operators. In this project, we will develop mechanisms that will decide which data will be shared among UAVs, determine the required data quality and update the mission tasks, and optimally prioritize networking and SAR tasks. Various coordination configurations will be tested on the UAV team using vision-based object detection and classification and the developed algorithms will be optimized based on the observations. The multi-UAV system will act as both a multi-hop wireless network and a sensor network. The data collected by the sensor network will help the SAR tasks by determining usable roads, detecting damaged buildings and locations of the victims by deep learning and computer vision techniques. Planned modular structure and interfaces will allow more efficient design of mission-oriented networks and enable analysis of individual system components.
