Open Access to JRC Research Infrastructures

JRC (Joint Research Center - Joint Research Center) opened three laboratories for environmental and mechanical materials assessment (EMMA) in Petten. EMMA facilities focus on material testing at high temperatures and corrosive environments using micro to macro scale test specimens. Much of the research supports international and European projects involving national nuclear research laboratories, academia and the nuclear industry.

In this context;

The Actinide UserLab (Actuslab) includes state-of-the-art instruments to measure and explore material properties over a wide range of temperatures, pressures and magnetic fields. The work performed at JRC helps bring actinide knowledge to the "material-by-design" level. Encouraging international cooperation and providing access to its specialized facilities through EU programs appears crucial for the realization and expansion of the European Research Area in the fields of actinide chemistry and physics.

The European Structural Evaluation Laboratory (ELSA) offers the world's largest Hopkinson bar facility (HopLab) used to inspect materials and structural components against very fast dynamic loads such as explosions and damage from impacts.

The JRC Nanobiotechnology Laboratory has state-of-the-art facilities for interdisciplinary studies, with special emphasis on the characterization of nanomaterials, nanodrugs, advanced materials and micro(nano)plastics. Studies focus on developing a science-based understanding of the physico-chemical properties of these materials and their interactions with biological systems.
